About Pearl

Pearl rectangular dual membrane condenser capsule
Pearl rectangular dual membrane condenser capsule

This capsule, a "trademark of Pearl", is used in our studio microphones TL 4,TL 44, DS 60, CC 30,CC 22. The capsule achieves a very flat and resonance free frequency response which extends far into the low- as well as the high frequencies. The framework is made from POM and the electrodes are made from brass. The outside plates (gold plated) which hold the membranes are also made from brass. The membranes themselves are aluminium vapourized. The capacitance of each side is 90 pF at 80 volts polarization voltage.

Pearl - Stereo condenser microphone DS 60 -multiple choice stereo microphone Pearl - Stereo condenser microphone DS 60 -multiple choice stereo microphone
This microphone offers stereo recording in different modes. The microphone contains two rectangular dual membrane capsules. It is the Pearl classical, designed in the -60´s: The capsules are mounted one above the other 90 degreeds apart. These capsules capture the nuances of a live performance by achieving a very flat and resonance-free frequency response that extends deep into the lower frequencies and high into the upper frequencies 18-25000 Hz). Instead of being divided into two parts the capsules are fixed at 90 degreeds to each other. The microphone consists of a solid-brass body, finished in black chromium and gold plated mesh. During an X-Y recording, simply turn the microphone and direct the engraved X-Y sign towards the centre of the sound field. For M-S recording, there is an engraved M-S sign to be used in the same way. The required microphone pattern is chosen at the console. This is the reason there are no switches on the microphone. There is also no need for a control unit as the microphone is phantom powered. A red LED shows that power is on.The pre-amplifier, which is extremely quiet, has four output channels, one for each cardioid membrane, connected via a 9 pin Lemo plug. Each capsule provides 180 degreeds coincident stereo. The operator decides how to use the signals, either cardioid, figure of eight, omni-directional, X-Y or M-S patterns or Blumlein. The microphone is connected by a special cable consisting of a 9 pin Lemo at the microphone end and a four way splitter terminating in 3-pin XLR´s to the console. The DS 60 is very versatile in many different recording situations. It is a natural choice for the consert hall yet just as well suited for church organs. Success is guaranteed when recording small groups such as a string quartet. The microphone is finished in black chromium and gold plated net.

Pearl - Mono-stereo condenser microphone TL 4 - studio microphone with unique qualities Pearl - Mono-stereo condenser microphone TL 4 - studio microphone with unique qualities

This microphones is equal in a mode of application, but they are different in the technical specification. This microphones uses the classic Pearl capsule with rectangular dual membranes mounted back-to-back in its compact black chrome body. A variety of polar patterns may be obtained by bringing the output of each membrane into separate mixer channels. In effect they provides two discrete cardioid outputs which may be used simultaneously or independently one of the other to obtain cardioid, omni, figure of eight, 180 degrees coincident stereo and virtually any pattern in between by use of the mixing console. The beauty is the versatility which allow it to handle a variety of the tasks at hand. For instance; it may be used as the single stereo microphone for a direct to tape live recording in the afternoon, then be brought back to the studio and used as cardioid mic for an acoustic guitar during a multitrack session in the evening, and then used late a night as a figure-of-eight mic for recording background vocal duet.

Versatility would mean nothing if they did not capture the nuances and life of the performance. By using the recangular capsule, the achieves a very flat and resonance free frequency response which extends far into the lower frequencies. This makes it an accurate yet flattering microphone for vocals and acoustic instruments, not to mention meeting the challenges of symphonic organ recordings. The sound is further enhanced by use of a transformerless preamplifier circuit which is extremely quiet. The circuit requires 48V phantom power which, when supplied, illuminates a LED. Best of all the microphones is very reasonably priced which makes it perhaps the best value of any microphones, today. Look at the versatility and listen to its sound. The TL 4 as well as the TL 44 will complement your current microphone collection no matter how wonderful it is and we believe it will soon become one of your most frequently used tools. The model TL 4 is, compared to the TL 44, an so-called "High-Level-Microphone" and provide an approximately 20 dB higher output level than conventional condenser microphones. It also means that this microphone request an input impedance of at least 6k ohm.

Pearl - Pearl - "Linear" microphones ELM-B Recommended for Stereo Recording

Line source loudspeakers are well known in professional audio: they give a good spread of sound laterally but have tightly controlled directivity in a vertical sense. The Pearl linear microphone capsule has some similar properties, though this is not its only advantage. Conventional microphone capsules are round. It's an easy shape to make consistently, but it has one significant disadvantage in that its high degree of symmetry makes the primary resonance quite pronounced. Damping can reduce some of the ills caused by that resonance, but it is still there and most often well within the audio band.

The size of round capsules is also a problem. Large is good for signal/noise ratio, but leads not only to a lower (hence more noticeable) resonance but also to a more marked increase in directivity at high frequencies. Very small capsules suffer from a reduced signal/noise ratio.

Pearl has made rectangular capsules for many years now, but never before with such an extreme (7:1) length/width ratio. The new linear capsule has more than twice the surface area of large-diameter round capsules, giving excellent signal/noise ratio, but avoids their high levels of in-band resonance (the resonance due to end-to-end vibration modes is very weak). In addition, at high frequencies the small width dimension makes for very good uniformity of directional pattern in the lateral sense, while usefully attenuating reflections from floor and ceilings - high frequency signals from above and below the 'line of sight' are almost never of any use!

This means that Pearl's new microphone can deliver a very accurate, uniform and consistent response pattern, with very flat response, low noise and useful attenuation of 'nuisance' reflections. The capsule is used in the new models ELM-B (figure-of-eight) and ELM-C (cardioid) and is highly recommended for stereo recording. The result: exceptional sonic neutrality. Hear it for yourself!

Finished in black chromium.

The ELM comes in aluminium case AC01
